Kawasaki Frontale Physical Coach/ Yosuke Shinoda
Athletic Trainer/Toshiyuki Tokorozawa
This time, we spoke with Kawasaki Frontale's physical coach Yosuke Shinoda and athletic trainer Tokorozawa Toshiyuki about how to use REVIVE from the perspective of recovery and conditioning.
"When traveling for long periods of time, REVIVE is extremely useful for preventing swelling ."
"The texture is neither too hard nor too soft, so it puts less strain on the joints and can be used in the healing process ."
(Coach Shinoda/Trainer Tokorozawa)
What is the role of the physical coach and trainer on the team?
Coach Shinoda) The role of the physical coach is mainly to adjust the training content, time, and intensity of the entire team's daily practice in consultation with the manager and coaches so that the team can face games in the best possible condition. In addition, I provide individual support for conditioning, such as strength training, training to improve cardiopulmonary function, and footwork.
Tokorozawa Trainer) The main role of a trainer is to help improve and maintain the condition of injured or unwell players. Compared to a physical coach, there is more individual support, assisting players so that they do not miss practice as much as possible, and for players who are unable to participate in practice due to serious injuries, the main job is to provide a separate rehabilitation menu and assist so that they can participate in the whole practice.
Tell us about recovery in soccer.
Tokorozawa Trainer) In recent years, the physical load in soccer has increased, and injuries are on the rise. As teams get stronger, the number of games increases, so it is important to get players back in good condition. Recovery has always been important, but what's different from the past is that there are now more effective recovery tools like REVIVE.
Coach Shinoda) Our team tries to eat jelly, Japanese sweets, orange juice, and other foods that provide immediate nutrition immediately after a match. After that, the first step in recovery is to eat a well-balanced meal and get enough quality sleep. I think it would be even better if there were tools to support nutrition and rest. Also, from a physical standpoint, it's important to eat nutrition and rest immediately after the match, and the next day, do active recovery, such as jogging or other light exercise, to promote blood flow and circulate nutrients, recover from fatigue, and repair damaged muscle tissue.
Tokorozawa Trainer) For athletes who can run on their own, running is one way to move the muscles, but for athletes who can't, applying water pressure in a pool or using air pressure like REVIVE to stimulate blood flow can be effective.
What kind of situations is REVIVE actually used in?
Tokorozawa Trainer) I usually use it as a recovery tool after finishing practice and eating. For players who are very tired, I take it home and use it multiple times. Also, for injured players, I lowered the output to suppress the swelling because the swelling was quite severe, and used it within the range that did not cause pain.
Coach Shinoda) REVIVE is also extremely helpful in preventing swelling during long trips, such as when traveling.
When actually using it, what specific pressure and time are set?
Tokorozawa Trainer) When using it for recovery purposes, I set the strength to about 70mmHg* and try to use it many times. Increasing the number of contractions and repeating the pumping action ultimately leads to improved blood flow, so I instruct players not to use it too strong. It can be used for up to 30 minutes, but we don't set a specific time, so we let the player use it as many times as they like. When using it for rehabilitation purposes, I set it to about 30mmHg at first, but eventually used it at about 70mmHg.
Coach Shinoda) As a physical coach, I think that doing it for a long time the day before a match can be effective in relaxing the body, but I don't think it's good to loosen the muscles too much, so I think it's better to do it for a shorter period of time.
*REVIVE can be adjusted in 16 increments (5mmHg) between 20 and 100mmHg. mmHg is the same unit as commonly used blood pressure monitors. What do you think is good about REVIVE?
Tokorozawa Trainer) The fact that it's rechargeable makes it convenient to use when you're away from home or in other places where there aren't any power outlets.
Coach Shinoda) The device is small and lightweight, making it easy to carry around. It also comes in a variety of sizes, so it can be adapted to the body shape of each player, which is a plus.
Tokorozawa Trainer) Also, the texture of the boots is neither too hard nor too soft, and the shape of the boots does not put the ankle in plantar flexion, so it puts less strain on the joints. Players need to practice while recovering from injuries, so I think it's good to be able to use them at that time.
From the perspective of both the physical coach and trainer who supports the team, we were able to hear about the importance of promoting blood flow in recovery and conditioning. We look forward to seeing Kawasaki Frontale's continued success in the future.
